Creating A Pattern For A Fairy Costume

As Halloween quickly approaches, many little girls will want to be one of the most popular costumes, the fairy costume. With the very popular image of Disney's Tinkerbell and countless Barbie dolls dressed as fairies, there is no surprise that the fairy costume is always at the top of the list of Halloween costume ideas.

Dance Class Basics Provide Perfect Foundation For Fairy Costume

Creating your own pattern for a fairy costume pattern is a very easy task and is one that takes minimal supplies to create. If your daughter is already in a ballet, jazz or other style of dance class, you may already have a leotard, tights and dance shoes or ballet slippers. These three items provide the foundation for the pattern of the fairy costume.

Making your own fairy costume pattern will require a few pieces of cardboard, cut from any cereal box or any other form of cardboard you can find around the house. You will want to measure the distance from your daughter's waist to her knee, allowing an extra inch at the top for sewing the waistband.

Basic Pattern Design For Fairy Costume

The ideal pattern for the fairy costume includes both flower petals and leaves. It is best to cut the flower petals in dimensional proportions of 6 X 12 . Be sure that you cut the bottom in a curved shape, consistent with a flower petal. The leaves, which will create the top layer of the skirt, should be 4 X 8 . When creating the pattern for the leaf, be sure to bring the bottom portion to a point as a leaf naturally does on a plant.

Once the final fairy costume patterns have been created, using a fabric pencil or pen, trace the petal image on two complimentary colors that create a pleasant floral appearance. Do not cut any of the fabric at this time. When both of the colors have had to flower petal traced repeatedly across the length of the fabric, place onto the side and begin tracing the petal pattern across the length of the green fabric.

When all petals and flowers of the pattern for the fairy costume have been traced, cut only the lower edges off of the three pieces of material. The finished portion of this pattern for the fairy costume should be three pieces of fabric with one straight edge and one edge cut for petal or leaf.

Layer each of the pieces of fabric, off-setting the floral petals to allow both colors to be viewed in a layered fashion. Sew a thin line along the top baseline of the petals, along the waistline of the skirt. Then, lay a thick piece of elastic on the waistline, secure it in place with a straight pin and fold the top of the skirt over to make a cover over the elastic and bring the waist of the skirt down upon itself. Sew the top waistband down, allowing room for the elastic to lie without being sewn into the waistband itself. Use Velcro to close the top of the waistband, pin or tie the elastic when your child has the costume on.

Simple Ideas To Accessorize Your Fairy Costume For Your Little Girl

Finish touches for the costume might include a magic wand, floral headpiece and tulle wings. No matter how you accessorize your fairy princess costume, your daughter will be overjoyed and ready to fly off into the fairy world of make believe.
